lately, i’ve been reviewing all of things i do to protect myself online, and i wanted to make a post with a few tips for other bloggers if they’re concerned about their safety. please keep in mind that this list is ever-evolving, and feel free to add to it if you’d like!
♡ if you’re using a smartphone to take photos, turn off location services for your camera.
if you have location services enabled for your smartphone, the EXIF data in each picture you take will contain the approximate latitude and longitude of your location. this information is very easily accessed, and some websites can even pinpoint an approximate address 😦
♡ do not post photographs that have any identifying information in the background.
this includes things like logo affiliations (with schools, town, etc.). if you want to protect your identity, you don’t want to link your images with anything identifying.
♡ check up on your online presence frequently.
this can be as simple as googling yourself (and your username/blog name/pseudonym) to see if any other websites have stolen and reposted your content.
♡ use a tagging system on your blog.
tagging things can become tedious, but it allows you to view past content in an organized way (especially if you have a lot of posts on your blog). for example: i have a #personal tag that i can go through to see if there are any posts i want to delete.
♡ keep in mind that on tumblr, while you can delete your original posts, you cannot delete any reblogs of it.
this is one thing that irks me about tumblr. even if you delete a post, it still exists on the blogs of anyone who reblogged it (unless they delete their blog or delete the post).
♡ avoid linking any personal accounts (with identifying information) to accounts with nsfw content.
although it’s unlikely, it’s possible for someone who knows you to make the connection.
other small tips!!
♡ use a pseudonym instead of your real name.
♡ block and/or report anyone who is harassing you or making you uncomfortable.
♡ connect with existing tumblr communities to find support and communicate with other content creators.
